Landscapes

These landscapes are my current works in progress.  I have become totally mesmerized by the new vantage point and perspective tools like Google Earth have brought to us.  For me it has added a new way of looking at a subject, the central valley, that I have been making images of since I moved away from my home town over 20 years ago.

I am interested in the boundaries between wild and developed spaces, the marks we leave on the land and the way the land shapes the way we live.

The images below are from my sketchbook.

The next two images are of the preparatory digital painting for the print, Urbanization, State 1.  The first image is the whole print, the second a detail.

Below is a digital mock-up of another print series I am working on.  The idea is that it is printed on 9 layers, each a separate piece of paper that will get laminated together and framed with the back open to light.  The paper layers will cause the fogging affect.  Lighting it frontally or from behind will give it the appearance of a different time of day.

These are two studies that I am pretty happy with.  I am exploring doing more of these “Watershed” pieces on a variety of scales.  These are two “paintings” that use modeling paste, toner washes, spray paint, airbrush, acrylic, and pencil.
